What is an artist? Who can be and Artist? What does it mean to work as an Artist?
I recently read an article on New
York Times, ART; Is It Art? Is It good? And Who Says So? The Times asked “art-world participants and observers for answers” it’s their opinions on what art is
and if its good. In the photo above there is three quotes that I agree with.
I like Richard Prince’s opinions, I like that
he said that its art when you think its good and when it makes you feel good. I
also think he is right about no one agreeing with each other about if an artwork
is good or not. In the world of art it’s up to the persons perspective and what
the artwork makes them feel. There isn’t a right or wrong answer in art.
I also like Louise Bourgeois view, she says that her art work is for her, its
to make her feel good, its her outlet. And she lets the audience make up their own
minds on what they take away from her artwork.
I also like Barbara Kruger’s view on what art is. She says that just because art
work is in a gallery it is art, just like everything that’s not in a gallery isn’t
art. She believes that art is personal and can tell what it is like to be
alive.
The three peoples quote that stood out to me are artist themselves, and although they are
all different I think the common thing between these quotes it that they all believe
art is personal. It doesn’t matter what others think about your art, as long as
it has benefited you and you feel good and enjoy doing it then that is art, and
its good art.

I believe that art is a personal outlet, art can express feelings, it can be emotional, emotionless, it can make people feel moved. It’s a powerful form that with each person that observes it has a different feeling, a different opinion. Not everyone will think the same about a piece of art. I think that’s the special thing, an artwork that speaks to me and I think is good, you might not. I think the most important person to say your own art is good is yourself. If you believe its good, if you felt good when creating it that’s the most important part. Its your art, you need to enjoy what you do.
